The best scene from the Stone biopic of George W Bush was a war room conference where they are discussing why Iraw must be invaded. Cheney, played by Richard Dreyfus, goes to the big display screen which projects a big red Iran in the middle of the Middle East and he explains that without secured oil supplies the US would not have global dominance in the next generation. The invasion of Iraq and the up ending of Saddam would give the US a choke hold on Iran and lead to its removal as a threat to American pre-eminence in the region.
At the end of his talk, W asks ‘What’s our exit strategy?’
The room is nervously silent, unwilling to acknowledge the truth, until Cheney says simply, ‘There is no exit strategy. We are there to stay. And no one will be able to fuck with us ever again.’
